Empowering Young Girls for Impactful Leadership and Social Cohesion: My Experience at the Natitingou Summer Camp

This month, a remarkable event unfolded at the Lycée des Jeunes filles in Natitingou. Proudly organized by the collaboration between the Natitingou Prefecture and the Atacora Champions, the second edition of the Summer Camp for Young Girls took place. This year’s theme centred on “Girls’ Engagement for Impactful Leadership and Social Cohesion in Support of Education.” The event welcomed 150 talented young girls from the Atacora and Alibori regions, identified for their academic excellence. These exceptional participants delved into diverse sessions and activities that not only amplified their understanding of their role as agents of societal transformation, sustainable development, and peace but also fostered a sense of unity.

This initiative, made possible through the invaluable technical and financial support from UNICEF Bénin through the French, Dutch, and Canadian National Committees, alongside Plan Bénin and African Park, aimed to make a resounding impact. The Atacora and Alibori regions were chosen due to their proximity to Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Nigeria. These border areas often grapple with the challenges posed by Sahel crisis. This event stands as a beacon of hope against early and forced marriages, insecurity, abductions, displacement, and educational setbacks faced by young girls in these regions.

During this insightful camp, I had the privilege of presenting UNICEF’s platforms for adolescent and youth engagement, with a special focus on U-Report. The main goal of my session was to encourage the participants to recognize the power of their voices and commitment as young citizens. We delved into the digital avenues provided by UNICEF to amplify their advocacy for children’s rights. U-Report, a revolutionary platform, took center stage as we explored its functions through live demonstrations. Witnessing the enthusiasm and dedication of these young girls as they embraced their potential was truly inspiring 🤩.

The interactive sessions were nothing short of transformative. Through role-playing and action board exercises, the girls received fictional scenarios linked to child rights, social cohesion, and peace. Collaboratively, we crafted impactful skits that conveyed key messages. The “Action Board” segment allowed the girls to brainstorm positive actions in various categories—within their community, school, and home—to promote the rights of children. The campers delivered thought-provoking sketches, infused with humour and wisdom, and they proposed actionable plans that they intend to implement upon their return to their respective communities.

🙌 Together, we witnessed the power of education, mentorship, and collective action. Let’s continue to champion the cause of these extraordinary girls and create a world where their voices shape positive change. 🌍
